Press: Pro Football Writers of America Annual Award Winners

June 23, 2006 - President David Elfin is pleased to announce the Pro Football Writers of America's annual awards. The PFWA would like to congratulate all the nominees, but especially the deserving winners. The McCann winner will be recognized during the induction weekend in August at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The other winners will be officially presented with their awards during the upcoming season. 

The winners are:
 

GOOD GUY --
Given to the player who best helps the media do its job: New York Giants running back Tiki Barber. 

HALAS --
Given to the player or coach who has performed with abandon despite injury or personal problems off the field: Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy. 

HORRIGAN --
Given to the league or club official for his or her qualities and professional style in helping the pro football writers do their jobs: Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese. 

McCANN:
Given to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage: John McClain, The Houston Chronicle. 

ROZELLE:
Given to the club public relations department that consistently strives for excellence in its dealings and relationships with the media: Cincinnati Bengals.

There will be a rematch of the Super Bowl XXXVIII contestants. Every game will feature at least one 2003 playoff team. And JOE GIBBS will notch a Hall of Fame first.

Those stories and more are featured in the 11-game national TV schedule that was announced today by the NFL with the complete 2004 preseason matchups.

The schedule kicks off with the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio on Monday night, August 9 on ABC when the Washington Redskins take on the Denver Broncos. The day before, JOHN ELWAY will become the first player who spent his entire career with the Broncos to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Then new Redskins head coach Gibbs will become the second Hall of Fame member to coach a team in the Hall of Fame Game (PAUL BROWN, Cincinnati, 1975).
